Some students prefer to learn only one dance, which is fine, but remember, you will end up only being able to dance when a particular style of song is played.
If you follow the Medal/Assessment System level by level and choose a variety of styles and dances, you will become a well-rounded social dancer, able to dance to anything that is played.
Many of the same patterns can, and are, used in a variety of dances, which makes learning several dances much easier, while most professional dance studios teach using some structured Medal or Assessment System; as this is the most organized way to keep track of an individual’s dance progress.
You can choose the style/dances that you wish to excel in and your instructor will teach you the patterns, timing and techniques in those particular styles and dances (Syllabus).
This System is broken into three major categories; Bronze, Silver and Gold.
The student and instructor can keep track of their progress, with fundamental areas monitored such as; foot positions; footwork; timing; lead/follow and styling, so you always know where you stand in your progress.
A folder (electronic or hard copy) may be kept for the student and instructor, which contains the dances and step list for each of those dances (Syllabus).
The Association of International Dance award system offers an easy way for students to track their progress while enjoying their dancing.
This approach allows students the opportunity to lay the foundation for their dancing knowledge, by learning the step patterns and techniques from a variety of social and specialised dances to allow a comfortable movement around the dance floor.
The various ‘Levels’ or Bronze, Silver and Gold assessments are milestones which mark the completion of one stage of growing progress, while opening the door for the next.
They are available in a range of Ballroom, Latin American and New Vogue styles, to a variety of Club Dance styles and, within each dance style in the syllabi of each level of dance are defined elements and restrictions; designed to create a developmental progression through increasingly complex concepts of dancing and dynamic movement.
The 'Cabochon Glass Art’ awards have been designed in a modern style that allows the award to be either worn as a jewelry item or attached to a keychain, rather that being ‘tucked away' in a drawer; while each image insert and ‘Cabochon’ backing has been created to depict the dance style and level accomplished.
Higher awards are available for those students who wish to incorporate an assessment that has a greater expectation of performance and are designed to allow both student and teacher an opportunity for; creativity; flexibility in timing and the exploration of new movements, shapes and choreography while expressing emotion through dance with an opportunity to ‘break’ the rules.
